The relationship between self-?determination of children and assertive behavior: The mediating effect of internal and external loci of control

|
The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediating effects of internal and external loci of control between children’s self-determination and assertive behavior. The sample consisted of 294 children in the 4~6th grades from an elementary school from J city, Jeonbuk, Korea. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 23.0. First, according to gender, self-determination and assertive behavior exhibited significant differences. Second, Children’s self-determination and internal and external loci of control showed a positive and negative correlation with assertive behavior. Third, it was found that children’s self-determination not only had a direct effect on assertive behavior, but also had a positive and negative indirect effect through internal and external loci of control. This suggests the need to develop a program to nurture assertive behavior in children to help them form stronger and more intimate peer relationships. Our results also speak to the need for better environmental support measures at home and school to develop children’s self-determination and internal loci of control.
